Idaho first to sign law aimed at health care plan

On Wednesday Otter signed a piece of legislation that will require the state of Idaho to sue the federal government upon passage of health care reform which comes as Democrats in Congress hope to pass healthcare reform this weekend.
BOISE, Idaho — Idaho took the lead in a growing, nationwide fight against health care overhaul Wednesday when its governor became the first to sign a measure requiring the state attorney general to sue the federal government if residents are forced to buy health insurance.Similar legislation is pending in 37 other states.Constitutional law experts say the movement is mostly symbolic because federal laws supersede those of the states.But the state measures reflect a growing frustration with President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. The proposal would cover some 30 million uninsured people, end insurance practices such as denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, require almost all Americans to get coverage by law, and try to slow the cost of medical care nationwide.Democratic leaders hope to vote on it this weekend.

Every March, college students from around the country receive either a thick or a thin envelope. For many of them, this will be the biggest event in their lifetimes. It will be a source of pride for some; envy and disappointment for others.As Americans, we’d like to believe our meritocratic sensibilities do a great job allocating talent, but alas, the truth is that at many colleges throughout America race matters more than brains.Proponents of affirmative action, though, present a false picture when they suggest that they’d be fine with wealthy, white kids being denied admissions in favor of lesser qualified (and often just as wealthy) blacks and Hispanics. In actuality, the people who most often lose their spots at elite colleges in higher education are Asians and Asian-Americans. [The adverse impact of affirmative action against poor whites remains a source of contention and research.]But what would a world without affirmative action look like? Putting aside your view of whether or not should exist let’s examine how it actually works by examining such a world. In 2005, The Chronicle of Higher Education cited a paper that looked at just that question.

Fully one-quarter of the space on this year∙s form is taken up with questions of race and ethnicity, which are clearly illegitimate and none of the government∙s business (despite the New York Times∙ assurances to the contrary on today∙s editorial page). So until we succeed in building the needed wall of separation between race and state, I have a proposal. Question 9 on the census form asks ∜What is Person 1∙s race?∝ (and so on, for other members of the household). My initial impulse was simply to misidentify my race so as to throw a monkey wrench into the statistics; I had fun doing this on the personal-information form my college required every semester, where I was a Puerto Rican Muslim one semester, and a Samoan Buddhist the next. But lying in this constitutionally mandated process is wrong. Really ∔ don∙t do it.
Instead, we should answer Question 9 by checking the last option ∔ ∜Some other race∝ ∔ and writing in ∜American.∝ It∙s a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, ∜American∝ was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.
So remember: Question 9 ∔ ∜Some other race∝ ∔ ∜American∝. Pass it on.

Crime Sweep Yields 55 Arrests

PHOENIX — The first night of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s latest crime-suppression sweep through metropolitan Phoenix yielded 55 arrests, deputies said.Of the people arrested, 31 are suspected illegal immigrants, deputies said. Authorities also seized 275 pounds of marijuana and 4 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine.Four hundred deputies and posse members were deployed as part of the sweep, which will continue throughout Friday.Arpaio said he funds the sweeps using state funds and donations; however, he would not elaborate on how much money the sweeps cost.“I don’t know what it costs to lock somebody up today,” Arpaio said Thursday evening. “We’ve got the gas. We’ve got the cars. We’ve got the guns — what’s the cost?”This is the 14th sweep Arpaio has conducted since 2008. The sheriff said he started the crime-suppression sweeps after seeing a spike in illegal immigration.
