NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A popular bookstore and cafe near Yale University wants its many Hispanic employees to speak only English around customers, sparking controversy in immigrant-friendly New Haven, where students fight for immigrant rights.
Atticus Bookstore and Cafe recently issued a policy stating that English should be the only language spoken on the floor and behind the counter.

PHOENIX - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday threw out legal limits on corporate and union spending to influence elections, calling restrictions an unconstitutional infringement on First Amendment rights.The ruling, combined with another court ruling this week, could have an amplified meaning in Arizona."Speech is an essential mechanism of democracy, for it is the means to hold officials accountable to the people," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the 5-4 majority in striking down federal laws barring these groups from spending money to persuade voters to support or oppose specific candidates. And Kennedy said there is no reason to believe the constitutional right to free speech should be limited to "human beings," as opposed to associations of humans, which includes corporations.....
"The . . . decision is a real sea change," said Todd Lang, executive director of the Citizens Clean Elections Commission.Corporations "can spend as much money as they want endorsing candidates of their choice," which, he said, allows well-heeled corporations to financially bury those candidates they oppose, with publicly financed contenders lacking funding to respond in-kind.Nick Dranias, attorney for the Goldwater Institute, which sued to overturn the matching-funds provision, agreed with Lang on at least one level: The two court decisions could be the death knell for public campaign funding in Arizona....Although Arizona is not known as a union stronghold, Jim Haynes, president of the Behavior Research Center, which does political polling, said Thursday's ruling actually could give unions more influence over elections than corporations....
But Rebekah Friend, executive director of the state AFL-CIO, said that while the ruling presents some opportunities, corporations can still "outspend us 20 to 1, 30 to 1."

Campaign Finance Decision May Hurt Patriotic Immigration Reform

I am a pragmatist rather than an idealist when it comes to elections and electoral law. So no matter what the constitutional merits of the Supreme Court’s decision, this could be a disaster for patriotic immigration reform. Having worked with dozens of patriotic immigration reform candidates in Republican primaries, I can say without a doubt the biggest problem is money. Whenever an open border candidate like Chris Cannon is seriously threatened, or if a Tancredo like candidate has a real shot, the money will come pouring in from the lobbying and corporate interests. Because of the $2,300 cap on individual donations and ban on corporate donations, we will usually be able to stay within at least 1/3 to 1/2 as much as the open borders candidate. We will have more total donors giving 50 or 100 contributions, but they get the big money contributors. However, on ballot propositions like prop 200 and 202 in Arizona when there are very few campaign finance regulations, we will be outspent at least 5 to 1, and in some cases 10 to 1.

While several individual INS offices took independent steps to prevent fraudulent claims, there was no standard, unified procedure that effectively prevented fraud. He also notes that due to the lack of foresight, there were many opportunities to administer basic vaccinations during the medical exams. While this oversight has been corrected in recent years, there are still a great many people who would have profited greatly from this preventative measure. Under IRCA, employers could hire subcontractors without certifying the legal status of their employees. Moreover, while some of the changes IRCA brought about allowed INS workers who worked on a face to face basis with the applicants to escape the unpleasant tasks of informing applicants of bad news, it also eliminated the agency’s first barrier to inappropriate applications. One by-product of this decision was that it made it easier for officials to simply approve questionable applicants rather than begin an arduous paperwork trail to deny someone’s application. Prior to the IRCA legislation, applicants had the ability and opportunity to withdraw their applications should it appear that they were ineligible for citizenship. Without this precaution, many questionable applicants were allowed to either be granted citizenship or waste time in the system.

One of the ironies of the new Temporary Protected Status program for Haitians illegally in the country on the date of the earthquake is that they can use illegally obtained welfare benefits to support an application to waive the $470 application fee for the TPS program. I doubt that there will be much utilization of this quirk – there are some useful bars to the award of such benefits to illegal aliens in these programs – but the Department of Homeland Security seems to be unaware of the possibility of the illicit use of programs such as Food Stamps and TANF (the old AFDC).

The whole point of the 1965 law was to standardize the selection of immigrants, rather than favoring Irish and Germans at the expense of Italians and Poles. Likewise with the 1980 Refugee Act. Gun crime committed by Third World-origin immigrants and their children has become the Metropolitan Police’s biggest area of concern as this year marks the predicted minority status of white people in Britain’s capital city.A new report on crime in London shows that although the total number of offenses fell, gangland shootings have led to a big rise in gun crime.Violent attacks were also up and senior officers said there were “grave concerns” over the rises.The number of offences involving guns, which also includes cases where criminals claimed to be armed, went up by 49 percent to 3,306 cases from 2,224 in 2008, the police said.
Gangsters engaged in drug and turf wars are increasingly using firearms to settle scores, and often only the skill of paramedics prevented shootings becoming murders. According to the report, the number of incidents of “youth violence cases” fell by 3.5 percent to “only” 20,272, meaning that there were 55 attacks every day, or over two per hour.

Scott Brown’s stunning victory over Martha Coakley is filled with national implications. Of course, what makes his win so dramatic is that Massachusetts is one of the bluest states in the country. Brown underlined this in his victory speech when he said “When there’s trouble in Massachusetts, rest assured, there’s trouble everywhere, and they know it.”Democrats control Massachusetts’ entire Congressional delegation and Obama won the state with a 26% margin in 2008. That a Republican can now win a statewide election by over five points is truly remarkable.But if the GOP is to learn any lessons about this election, they need to look at what really makes Massachusetts different.Massachusetts is blue—but it is also still White. According to Census estimates, 79.2% of the population is White, 8.6% is Hispanic, 7% is Black, and 5% are Asian. In 2008 exit polls, Blacks made up 9% of the electorate (probably disproportionately high because of the Obama effect), whites made up 82% and Hispanics and Asians both made up 3%.While no one took exit polls on Tuesday night, it is a very safe bet to assume that Whites made up an even greater percentage of the electorate this election than they did in 2008. Brown won by getting huge numbers of white independents and white Democrats to shift the GOP.Whites are the only swing voters in America. There is not, in fact, “trouble everywhere.” Democrats do not need to worry about losing in Detroit, DC, or Atlanta.
