Visa Flaws Exposed in New Report

The U.S. system for catching people who overstay visitor visas is totally inefficient, a major new report has found.

A newly disclosed Canadian intelligence study says al Qaeda might try to spread the deadly avian flu virus as part of its campaign to sow terror in Western nations. The report by the federal government's Integrated Threat Assessment Centre describes the avian flu as a "potential terrorist-induced" pandemic and specifically mentions Osama bin Laden. "It is significant to note that Osama bin Laden views chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons as legitimate," says the report, titled Pandemics: Avian Flu. "In addition, Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda representatives have repeatedly named Canada as a target," it says under the heading "Biology and Terrorism." A copy of the study was released to the National Post under the Access to Information Act. Security officials have long feared that Islamic terrorists bent on disrupting Western economies and killing masses of civilians might resort to biological agents.

Grannies on patrol; Women help lead Minuteman border vigil...
The grandmothers, dubbed the "Granny Brigade" by their colleagues, led the Minuteman's October effort in southern Arizona -- targeting the more than 6,000 illegal aliens who cross into Arizona everyday through a 260-mile corridor known as the Tucson sector, only about a third of whom are caught. "The illegal aliens eventually found out where we were stationed so they went around us," Mrs. Mercer said. "Our presence here proved that additional Border Patrol agents or National Guard troops on the border will effectively close it to illegal entry."   More than 4,500 Minuteman volunteers participated in the 30-day vigil to protest what they consider the U.S. lax immigration policies, manning observation posts and conducting foot and horseback patrols along the Mexican border from Texas to California and in seven states on the Canadian border.

Ted Turner: Avoiding a Russian arms disaster...
November 6, 2005
Hurricane Katrina drove home the staggering devastation that disasters -- natural or man-made --can inflict. Meanwhile, July's attacks on the London Underground reminded us terrorists can still strike major world cities. Now imagine the two joined together: terrorists, armed with weapons of mass destruction, unleashing Katrina-scale chaos and death in the heart of a U.S. city.
Such attacks are hardly unthinkable. Roughly half of Russia's weapons-grade nuclear materials are poorly protected. In the small Russian town of Shchuch'ye, nearly 2 million shells of VX and sarin nerve gas -- each lethal enough to kill 85,000 people -- lay stacked in chicken cooplike structures. The September 11 commission said al Qaeda has pursued getting and using these weapons as a "religious obligation" for more than a decade.

No Human Is Illegal [?]
Stanley Mailman and Steve Yale-Loehr recently penned some wise words concerning the term "illegal alien":    "An undocumented alien performing construction work is not an
outlaw engaged in illegal activity, such as bookmaking or burglary.  Rather, the work is lawful and legitimate; it simply happens to be work for which the alien is ineligible or disqualified ... A noncitizen who overstays a visa is no more an illegal person than an employer who fails to certify an IRCA form is an "illegal employer." Neither has thereby committed a crime ..."  (Undocumented Workers Seeking Personal-Injury Compensation, October 31, 2005, New York Law Journal).
Undocumented aliens find work in the US with the express support of millions of America's employers, including American families and households. These same undocumented aliens find a warm welcome from pretty much every American community and neighborhood. We need to bring our immigration laws in
conformance with the expressed desires of America's employers and  communities by legalization instead of demonizing the
undocumented by referring to them as "illegal aliens".   [FROM

The FBI Says We?re Safe ? Do You Believe Them?
The People's Truth Forum
- On October 17, 2005, the FBI issued its annual report on crime. A popular Website immediately pronounced, ?FBI Offers a Reason to Feel Safe.? Feeling safe, however, depends are what safe means. It?s no secret that crime as collected by the Department of Justice and reported annually by the FBI has been trending down. In fact, the crime rate is at a 30-year low according to the 2004 FBI report. Overall, the number of violent offenses, which include murder, assault, robbery and rape, dropped 1.2 percent in 2004, compared to 2003. Non-violent offenses, which include burglary, larceny and auto theft, also fell by an almost similar amount. The seven indices of violent and non-violent offenses represent data provided by nearly 17,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States. These data are meant to reflect a reliable system by which law enforcement agencies and criminologists can measure crime within the community. Reasoned judgments can then be made about public safety. As a society, can we rely on these FBI statistics to make us feel safe?
